Classes at ATA Martial Arts and Black Belt Academy

The ATA Martial Arts and Black Belt Academy are members of the American Taekwondo Association (ATA) and teach the Songahm style of Taekwondo. Songahm Taekwondo focuses on the personal development of the mind and body. Songahm Taekwondo comprises forms, sparring, self defense, board breaks, and weapons training. At our schools we emphasize safety for all ages and ranks. Sparring and board breaks are introduced only after the student has done the necessary preparation. We offer a variety of classes based on age and skill. All of our basic programs provide the following:

  • Full member patch
  • Eligibility for rank advancement
  • Free use of National transfer network
  • Access to all school social events
  • Access to clinics

Karate Kids (age 7-12)

The Karate for Kids program is based on a lifetime learning concept in addition to technical skills. The building blocks for our system are monthly themes such as:

  • Goals
  • Self-Control
  • Courtesy
  • Integrity
  • Friendship
  • Confidence
  • Self-Awareness
  • Self-Esteem
  • Perseverance
  • Self-Improvement
  • Respect
  • Dedication
These monthly themes will help your child to master the concepts and skills in order to progress through the belt ranks. In addition to monthly themes, our system includes the unique victory patch. Kids are rewarded special "Victory Stars" for outstanding performance in Taekwondo class, school, home or at a tournament competition. Kids may receive the following stars for the following deeds:
  • Gold -- Straight A's, Honor roll, or significant improvement

Adults and Young Adults

Taekwondo familyWe train our students to best of their ability. We have adults of all ages and fitness levels. Most come to us with limited flexibility. Adults start at any age. We have had adults who started as late as age 65 and have still earned their black belts. As a student you are looked upon as an individual and never compared to anyone else. Our instructors will be with you every step of the way. All that is expected of you is a willingness to try and give your best effort.

Here are some benefits you can expect from training in Songahm Taekwondo.

The principals of Taekwondo techniques are based on the design of your body. Training in Songahm Taekwondo will develop your cardiovascular system and personal endurance through our total body workouts. For power you develop the larger, powerful muscles of the torso. The speed of the techniques comes from the fast, agile muscles of the arms and legs. As you progress in Songahm Taekwondo you will learn to coordinate speed and power and develop the ability to focus all of your body's strength into a dense, hard-striking surface like the edge of the hand or the heel of the foot. By developing your cardiovascular system, endurance, speed and power through training in Songham Taekwondo you will improve your ability to defend yourself and those you care about most.

When the speed and power developed through Songham Taekwondo is used in a self-defense situation against the soft vulnerable parts of an attacker's body the result can be incredible. Taekwondo allows men and women to emphasize many of their natural physical strengths, such as power in the legs, while learning a method of self-defense effective against any size opponent. By knowing you can defend yourself, your confidence will grow. The display of confidence alone is usually enough to deter potential attackers.

This does not come naturally for many people, but self-confidence may be developed over a period of time. Through training in Songahm Taekwondo, you will accomplish new goals and your level of confidence will increase. Training in Songham Taekwondo instills a sense of discipline and self-confidence that can carry over to all aspects of your life. We look forward to you enbarking on your journey towards the most respected of all martial arts ranks...Black Belt!

Tiny Tigers (age 4-6)

In addition to our internationally recognized Karate for Kids program, we offer the Taekwondo for Tiny Tigers program. The Tiny Tigers program was developed specifically for preschool children ages 4 through 6. This program offers children a strong foundation in essential character, respect and discipline. In addition, the program is designed to improve children's motor skills and enhance their ability to pay attention and follow directions. All classes are taught using the most safe, fun, and exciting instruction methods available to assist your child in progressing through the belt ranks. This program works in conjunction with the Karate for Kids program, thereby emphasizing the same important monthly themes and value system.

Tiny Tigers imageJust like in the Karate for Kids program Tiny Tigers have their own unique victory patch and "Victory Stars." Stars are earned in the same way as the Karate for Kids program, with slight modifications in recognition of the preschool age of the child. Four different colored victory patches may be earned by Tiny Tigers as they accomplish their goals. Tiny Tigers may receive the following stars for the following deeds:

  • Gold --Straight A's, Honor Roll, or significant improvement
  • Green -- Special performance awards
  • Blue -- Monthly themes, weekly lessons, classroom performance
  • Red -- Tournament and safety skills
  • Purple -- Family skills

Upon graduation from the Tiny Tigers program into the "Junior" or "Big Kid" program, Tigers are rewarded by the opportunity to wear the "Big Kids" or "Karate for Kids" patch.
